The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5997749 is a No. 54 wire-gauge jobber-length drill bit designed for precision hole-making in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a straw oxide finish, it delivers extended tool life in demanding drilling applications. The 135-degree split point reduces walking at entry and requires less feed pressure compared to a conventional 118-degree point. At 1.875 inches overall length with a 0.875-inch flute, this bit suits tight-clearance drilling in production and MRO environments. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the typical end users.
This bit is rated for general-purpose drilling in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and a range of engineered materials, consistent with its P, M, K, N, and S workpiece material codes. The straight cylindrical shank accepts standard drill chucks without adapter hardware, making it compatible with bench-top drill presses, CNC machining centers, and handheld drill drivers. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration improves chip evacuation and reduces thrust force on through-hole and blind-hole work in production settings.
Part of the R10CO-R15CO-R18CO series. Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct substitute for wire-gauge No. 54 jobber drill bits used in general machining, production drilling, and MRO maintenance operations on steel and multi-material workpieces.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard keyed or keyless drill chuck rated for the shank diameter. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before applying power to the spindle. Inspect the cutting edges and web for wear or chipping before each use, and replace the bit if the point geometry is compromised to avoid workpiece damage or breakage. Follow shop-specific speeds and feeds for cobalt tooling when drilling hardened or stainless steel materials.
