The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5997142 is a taper length drill bit from the QC91P series, designed for general-purpose drilling in a wide range of metals and alloys. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this wire gauge size 47 bit measures 0.0785 inches in diameter and features a 135-degree split-point tip for self-centering starts without a center punch. The parabolic flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation and reduces heat buildup during extended drilling operations. With a flute length of 2.25 inches and an overall length of 4.25 inches, it fits standard drill chucks via its straight shank and suits both bench-top and handheld drilling setups.
This drill bit is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking trades in production and repair environments. The QC91P series targets heavy-duty general-purpose applications across ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The web-thinned, tapered web design reduces thrust force, making it effective for drilling into harder substrates such as hardened steel, stainless steel, titanium, and titanium alloys, as well as softer materials including aluminum, brass, copper, and magnesium alloys. The right-hand cut and parabolic flute configuration make it a reliable choice for consistent, repeatable hole quality in light manufacturing and field service contexts.
Designed as an ANSI-standard straight-shank taper length drill bit suitable for use in standard keyless and keyed drill chucks accepting wire-gauge-sized tooling. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, carbon steel, cast iron, copper, graphite, hardened steel, magnesium, magnesium alloy, malleable iron, nickel, stainless steel, steel, tempered steel, titanium, and titanium alloy.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with metalworking drill press or hand-drill operation. Secure the straight shank firmly in the chuck and verify runout before drilling. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece to prevent rotation. Do not exceed the rated speed range for the material being drilled, and apply cutting fluid when working with stainless steel, titanium, or other hard alloys to manage heat and prolong tool life.
