The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996970 is a No. 17 wire-size jobber-length drill bit ground from high speed steel with a 135-degree split point and bright uncoated finish. The 135-degree point geometry reduces walking on entry and requires less thrust than a standard 118-degree point, making it well suited for production drilling in steel and other ferrous materials. The bit carries a 0.1730-inch decimal diameter, a 3.375-inch overall length, and a 2.1875-inch flute length. It runs a two-flute regular spiral with a tapered, web-thinned web for improved chip evacuation. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard three-jaw keyless and keyed drill chucks without an adapter.
This bit is intended for general-purpose drilling in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. The QC21P series is a heavy-duty jobber line built to ANSI standards and sized for benchtop drill presses, hand-held electric drills, and CNC drilling operations in light to medium production environments. The 13xD flute-to-diameter ratio provides adequate chip clearance at typical jobber drilling depths. Coolant-through capability is not available on this shank style; external coolant or cutting oil is recommended when drilling stainless steel or superalloys.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber drill bit compatible with any standard three-jaw drill chuck accepting a straight-cylindrical shank in the 0.1730-inch diameter range, including benchtop drill presses, portable electric drills, and CNC drilling spindles.
Installation is performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, or drill press operators. Secure the shank fully into the chuck and tighten all chuck jaws evenly before operating. When drilling stainless steel, superalloys, or titanium, apply cutting oil or appropriate metalworking fluid at the drill point to extend tool life and reduce work hardening. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or dulling before each use; a damaged point should be reground or replaced before drilling resumes.
