The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996960 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal and hard materials. Manufactured from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bit features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and cutting force on entry. The parabolic spiral flute and web-thinned, tapered web construction promote efficient chip evacuation and help maintain cutting speed through deeper holes. At 3.5 inches overall length with a 2.3125-inch flute length, the 5996960 is suited for standard drill press and hand drill applications. Right-hand cut geometry and a straight cylindrical shank make it compatible with conventional drill chucks without adapters. Licensed HVAC techs, plumbers, pipe fitters, and general trade mechanics keep this size on hand for pilot holes and clearance drilling in structural and sheet steel.
Wire size 12 corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.1890 inches, placing this bit in a common range for clearance holes, tapping prep, and through-hole drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous stock. It is rated for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. The QC21P series is built to ANSI standards and classified as heavy-duty grade, making it appropriate for production drilling as well as field service work where hole quality and bit longevity matter.
Designed as an OEM-style jobber-length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1890-inch straight cylindrical shank, compatible with drill presses, hand drills, and right-angle drill attachments used across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general mechanical trade applications.
Install in a properly sized drill chuck and tighten fully before use; a loose chuck is the most common cause of bit wobble and oversize holes. Secure the workpiece before drilling to prevent rotation and injury. When drilling stainless steel or superalloys, use appropriate cutting fluid and reduce feed pressure to extend bit life and maintain hole quality. Dispose of worn bits properly — a dull high speed steel bit generates excess heat and produces out-of-tolerance holes.
