The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996453 is an extra length, high speed steel drill bit designed for deep-hole drilling in metal fabrication, mechanical, and industrial service work. The 1/8 inch diameter bit features a 135-degree split point for self-centering entry without a center punch, and a parabolic flute geometry that improves chip evacuation at extended depths. At 12 inches overall length with a 9 inch flute length, it reaches into deep bores and recessed cavities that standard-length bits cannot access. The uncoated HSS construction keeps the bit serviceable through multiple sharpenings. Licensed tradespeople and journeymen machinists are the typical installers.
This bit is suited for deep-hole drilling applications across a wide range of workpiece materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass, bronze, magnesium, nickel, thermoplastics, and thermosetting plastics. The QC1290P series is built to ANSI standards and is rated as a high-performance grade bit. Right-hand cutting direction makes it compatible with standard drill press and handheld drill driver setups. Web thinning with a tapered web configuration reduces thrust requirements and improves penetration in harder materials.
Compatible workpiece materials include aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, carbon steel, cast iron, graphite, hardened steel, magnesium, magnesium alloy, malleable iron, nickel, stainless steel, steel, structural steel, tempered steel, thermoplastics, and thermosetting plastics. Straight-cylindrical 1/8 inch shank fits standard drill chucks accepting that shank diameter.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tradespeople familiar with metal cutting operations. Secure the workpiece before drilling and confirm the drill chuck is properly tightened to the 1/8 inch shank diameter before operation. Reduce feed rate and apply cutting fluid when drilling harder ferrous materials to manage heat buildup at extended lengths. Inspect the bit for wear or damage before each use — a dull or cracked bit should be resharpened or replaced before continuing work.
