The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996440 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in a wide range of metals and engineered materials. It measures 0.1875 inches (3/16 inch) in diameter with a 135-degree split point that promotes self-centering and reduces walking on entry, minimizing the need for a center punch. The spiral flute geometry is regular-helix with a tapered web configuration and web thinning to reduce thrust force. Cobalt construction provides heat resistance and hardness retention when cutting hard or abrasive materials. This bit suits production machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and fabricators working with ferrous and non-ferrous stock.
This drill bit is suited for use in drill presses, CNC machines, and hand-held power drills across residential, commercial, and industrial job sites. Its taper length body — 5.75 inches overall with a 3.375-inch flute length — gives more reach than a jobber-length bit while maintaining rigidity. The straight shank accepts standard 3-jaw chucks without adapters. Typical applications include through-hole drilling in structural steel, stainless steel, cast iron, brass, bronze, aluminum, copper, and reinforced plastics.
Designed for use in standard 3-jaw chucks on drill presses, milling machines, and hand-held power drills. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, carbon steel, cast iron, cermet, copper, graphite, hardened steel, high strength bronze, magnesium, magnesium alloy, malleable iron, nickel, nickel alloy, reinforced plastic materials, and stainless steel. Conforms to ANSI standards per Series M51CO specifications.
Installation and use should be performed by machinists, fabricators, or trained maintenance technicians familiar with rotating cutting tools. Always secure the workpiece firmly in a vise or fixture before drilling; never hand-hold metal stock against a drill press. Ensure the drill chuck is fully tightened and the spindle is at the correct RPM for the material and bit diameter before engaging the cut. Inspect the cutting edges before each use — cobalt bits can chip if subjected to side loads or if used on improperly supported stock.
