The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996431 is a taper length cobalt drill bit engineered for heavy-duty metal drilling applications. Built on the M52CO series platform, it carries a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and allows self-centering entry without a center punch. The tool is ground from cobalt high-speed steel with a gold oxide finish and features a web-thinned, tapered web construction for reduced thrust and improved chip evacuation. At 0.1660 inches in diameter (wire size No. 19), it delivers the precise hole size required in close-tolerance work. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-room professionals are the primary installers.
This bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in a wide range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, malleable iron, hardened steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, high-strength bronze, copper, magnesium, magnesium alloy, nickel, nickel alloy, cermet, graphite, and reinforced plastic. The taper length body provides greater reach than a jobber-length bit, making it useful for drilling through thicker stock or in deep-hole applications where a standard length would fall short. The 3-3/8-inch flute length and 5-3/4-inch overall length place it in a working envelope appropriate for machine spindles and hand-held drill presses.
Designed as a heavy-duty, ANSI-standard taper length drill bit compatible with any three-jaw drill chuck or machine spindle accepting a straight-cylindrical shank at 0.1660 inches diameter. Suitable for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills configured for metal drilling.
Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck jaws and verify concentricity before beginning a cut to prevent premature bit deflection. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material, particularly when drilling stainless steel or hardened steel, to control heat buildup and extend tool life. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured securely; never hand-hold sheet stock during drilling. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use and resharpen or replace the bit when edge condition degrades.
