The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996188 is a screw machine length (stub-length) cobalt drill bit sized to No. 25 wire gauge, equivalent to 0.1495 inches decimal diameter. Built from M41 high-speed cobalt steel, it is rated for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials where standard HSS bits wear prematurely. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch and reduces walking on hard surfaces. The web-thinned, tapered web design lowers thrust requirements and improves chip evacuation. At 2-1/16 inches overall length with a 1-inch flute length, this stub-length geometry provides added rigidity for precision hole location in production and repair environments.
This bit is suited for drilling hard ferrous metals, stainless steel, cast iron, and similarly demanding workpiece materials in both production shop and field service applications. The screw machine length profile makes it a common choice for drill press work, CNC turret drilling, and hand drilling where a shorter, stiffer bit is preferred over a jobber-length alternative. It is sold as a single bit and carries an ANSI specification designation under the M41CO series.
Designed as a screw machine length replacement or production drill bit for use in standard 3-jaw drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.1495-inch straight shank, conforming to ANSI standards for No. 25 wire-size drill bits.
This bit is installed and serviced by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance trades familiar with drilling operations. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operating and confirm runout is within acceptable tolerance for the application. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling hard ferrous materials to extend tool life, noting this bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit when point geometry is degraded to avoid workpiece damage.
