The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996123 is a cobalt aircraft extension drill bit designed for drilling in hard metals, stainless steel, and high-strength alloys where standard HSS tooling falls short. Wire size No. 50 corresponds to a 0.0700-inch decimal diameter. The drill features a 135-degree split point that is self-centering and web-thinned, reducing walking on entry without a center punch. A straw finish indicates controlled heat treatment. At 6 inches overall length with a 1-inch flute length, this is an extension-length bit built for reaching into recessed or deep-clearance locations. Two right-hand spiral flutes provide chip evacuation. Licensed aircraft and aerospace shops, machine shops, and precision metalworking trades are the primary installers.
This drill bit is suited for aerospace, aviation, and precision industrial applications where an extension-length reach is required and material hardness demands cobalt tooling. The CO501-6 series is engineered for general-purpose use in ferrous and non-ferrous materials that would cause premature wear in standard high-speed steel bits. The straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification. Typical scenarios include drilling through structural airframe members, hardened brackets, and deep-cavity workpieces on the bench or in the field.
Designed as a general-purpose cobalt extension drill for use in standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.0700-inch straight-cylindrical shank; part of the PRECISION TWIST DRILL CO501-6 series.
Installation is performed by machinists and aircraft maintenance technicians using standard drill presses, hand drills, or pneumatic drill motors. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation to prevent runout. Use appropriate cutting fluid for hard or stainless materials to manage heat and extend tool life. Follow applicable workplace safety standards and, for aviation work, applicable FAA maintenance regulations when drilling structural components.
