The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996107 is a cobalt aircraft extension drill bit designed for drilling in hard metals, stainless steel, and high-temperature alloys where standard high-speed steel bits fail prematurely. Sized to wire gauge No. 46 (0.081 inches decimal), it features a 135-degree split point for self-centering starts without a center punch and a straw finish that indicates cobalt content and provides light oxidation resistance. The 6-inch overall length gives technicians extended reach in confined airframe, structural, or industrial applications. Right-hand spiral flutes with a 4xD flute-length-to-diameter ratio evacuate chips efficiently during deep-hole passes. Licensed machinists, aircraft mechanics, and metalworking tradespeople are the primary users of this bit.
This drill bit is built for aircraft maintenance and precision metalworking environments where tight tolerances and hole quality are critical. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification. At 1.125 inches of flute length, it handles moderate-depth holes while the extended body provides clearance past obstructions common in panel and structural drilling. The CO501-6 series is a general-purpose cobalt line suited to production and maintenance drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous hard materials. It meets NAS 907 Type J standards, making it appropriate for aerospace-regulated work.
Designed for use in any standard drill chuck or collet accepting a 0.081-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Fits No. 46 wire gauge drill requirements in aerospace, industrial, and precision metalworking applications per CO501-6 series specifications.
Aircraft mechanics and machinists should secure the workpiece firmly before drilling and use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling stainless or hardened alloys to extend bit life. Set drill speed according to material hardness and bit diameter guidelines — smaller diameter cobalt bits require higher RPM and lighter feed pressure to avoid breakage. Inspect the split point for chipping before each use; a damaged point will wander and compromise hole tolerance. Follow applicable shop safety and aviation maintenance manual procedures when drilling structural components.
