The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996104 is a cobalt aircraft extension drill bit designed for drilling in hard metals, stainless steel, and high-temperature alloys where standard high-speed steel bits wear prematurely. It carries a wire gauge size of 45, which corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.082 inches, and a straight-cylindrical shank of the same diameter for secure chuck seating. The 135-degree split point is self-centering and web-thinned, reducing the thrust needed to start a hole without a center punch. The straw finish indicates a heat-treatment process consistent with cobalt tooling. Overall length is 6 inches with a 1.125-inch flute length, making this an extension-length drill suited for reaching into deeper clearances than a jobber-length bit allows.
This drill bit fits applications in aerospace fabrication, sheet metal work, structural steel, and general industrial machining where extension reach is required. The 4xD flute-length-to-diameter ratio and right-hand spiral flute geometry promote chip evacuation in blind and through holes. It conforms to NAS 907 Type J standards, which governs aircraft-quality drill bits. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and aerospace mechanics are the primary installers of this tooling.
Designed as an aircraft-quality extension drill bit in Series CO501-6, suitable for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks and compatible drilling equipment sized for a 0.082-inch shank diameter.
This tooling is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians using standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-held pneumatic and electric drills with a compatible chuck. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank firmly in the chuck before operation to prevent slippage under torque. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling hard metals to extend tool life and control heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is present.
