The PRECISION TWIST DRILL 5996012 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built to the M41CO series specification, it carries a 135-degree split point with web thinning for reduced thrust and faster penetration on entry. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard drill chucks. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 1.0625-inch flute, this stub-length geometry delivers increased rigidity over jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in short-reach drilling operations. Right-hand cut spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently. This bit is appropriate for machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance trades working with hard stock.
The 5996012 is suited for production and maintenance drilling in hard materials where a standard jobber-length bit would flex or chatter. The screw machine length format is common in drill press, turret lathe, and CNC setup work where clearance is limited and rigidity is critical. Wire size 18 (0.1695 inches) makes it a practical choice for tapping prep holes and close-tolerance through-hole work in steel, stainless, and similarly hard workpiece materials. The 2.5xD flute-to-diameter ratio supports chip clearing without sacrificing core strength.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style screw machine drill bit for use with standard three-jaw drill chucks and collet holders accepting straight-cylindrical shanks, sized for hard-material applications within the 0.1500 to 0.2000 inch drill bit size range.
Installation of this bit should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician. Ensure the drill press, lathe, or hand drill is powered off and fully stopped before changing bits. Seat the shank fully into the chuck and tighten all jaws evenly to prevent runout. Do not use this bit beyond its rated material grade or without appropriate cutting fluid on hard ferrous stock, as overheating will degrade cobalt hardness and shorten tool life.
