The PFERD 21722216 is a solid carbide abrasive bur in the SC-5 Ball Nose Cylinder profile, designed for aggressive material removal on ferrous metals and hardened steels. It features a TOUGH Cut tooth geometry, which produces a coarse, fast-cutting action suited to heavy stock removal rather than fine finishing. The 1/2 inch cutting diameter and 1 inch length of cut give it substantial contact area, while the 1/4 inch shank fits standard die grinder collets. The uncoated carbide head delivers consistent performance in demanding applications up to 24,000 RPM. Licensed tradespeople and metalworking technicians use this bur for deburring, shaping, and cavity work where standard HSS tooling wears too quickly.
This bur is matched to applications involving annealed cast iron, grey and nodular cast iron, cast steel, standard steel, case-hardened steels, and hardened or heat-treated steels with hardness exceeding 370 HV (38 HRC). It performs in both production shop and field service environments. Typical applications include weld cleanup, port matching, mold work, and contour shaping in hard ferrous workpieces. The ball nose cylinder profile allows blended radii and bottom-of-cavity work where flat-end profiles cannot reach. It is used in combination with pneumatic or electric die grinders operating within the rated RPM range.
Designed for use on annealed cast iron, black annealed cast iron (GTS, GJMB), grey and nodular cast iron (GG/GJL, GGG/GJS), cast steel, standard steel and steel materials with elevated hardness, case-hardened steels, and hardened or heat-treated steels over 370 HV (38 HRC). Fits any die grinder or rotary tool accepting a 1/4 inch shank collet.
Installation and use of this bur is performed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, welders, and metalworking professionals using pneumatic or electric die grinders. Before mounting, confirm the grinder collet is clean and the shank is fully seated and tightened to the manufacturer specification for that grinder. Always verify the grinder operating speed does not exceed the 24,000 RPM rating of the bur before starting. Appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves is required; secure the workpiece before cutting to prevent movement.
