The PENN MACHINE 5001301701 is a 3-inch socket weld union rated for 3000 lb service, manufactured from forged carbon steel to ASTM A105 material standards. Built under Series 13017 by Pennsylvania Machine Works, this union is designed for high-pressure piping systems where a removable, pressure-tight connection between two pipe sections is required. The forged construction and Schedule 80/XH rating make it suitable for demanding industrial and process piping applications. At 4.313 inches in length with a 4.305-inch OD, it is a compact, heavy-duty fitting installed by licensed pipefitters and industrial plumbing contractors.
This union is intended for high-pressure carbon steel piping systems in industrial facilities, refineries, petrochemical plants, and power generation environments where socket weld fittings are specified. The 3000 lb pressure class and SCH 80/XH schedule rating make it appropriate for lines carrying steam, gas, or liquid media under elevated pressure and temperature conditions. It is typically installed in sections of piping that require periodic disassembly for maintenance or equipment servicing.
Designed for use in 3-inch Schedule 80/XH carbon steel piping systems requiring 3000 lb class socket weld unions per MSS-SP83 specifications.
Installation of socket weld unions should be performed by a qualified pipefitter or certified welder in accordance with applicable piping codes, including ASME B31.1 or B31.3 as required by the system design. The pipe end must be fully inserted into the socket and then backed out slightly before fillet welding to allow for thermal expansion during the weld cycle. Always depressurize and isolate the line completely before breaking any union connection or performing weld work. Verify that the union nut is properly engaged and the seat faces are clean and undamaged before returning the system to service.
