The OSG HP421-1968-BN is a solid carbide ball end mill engineered for high-performance metal removal in demanding machining applications. Part of the OSG Hy-Pro-Carb HP421BN series, it features a 0.1969-inch (5 mm) mill diameter, a 2-flute helical design with a 35-degree helix angle, and a TiAlN PVD coating applied over a submicron carbide grade. The coating extends tool life by resisting heat and wear at elevated cutting speeds. With a 0.6299-inch (16 mm) length of cut and single-end geometry, this tool is suited for both roughing and finishing passes in a single setup. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this tool in vertical or horizontal machining centers.
This ball end mill is designed for use across a wide range of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials (ISO material groups P, M, K, S, and H). The straight-cylindrical shank with h6 tolerance ensures secure, accurate toolholder engagement. Its standard length profile and compact 51 mm (approximately 2.008 inches) overall length make it well suited for close-tolerance cavity, profile, and contour milling where rigidity and surface finish control are critical.
Rated for cutting steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials (ISO groups P, M, K, S, H). Fits standard toolholders accepting a 5 mm straight-cylindrical shank with h6 tolerance.
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the spindle before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully in a collet or end mill holder rated for the shank diameter and torque the retention mechanism to the toolholder specification. Verify runout with an indicator before commencing a cut, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear and reduces surface finish quality on ball-nose tools.
