The OSG 8612794 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for high-performance metal drilling applications. It measures 5/16 inch (0.3125 inch decimal, 7.94 mm) in diameter with a 130-degree point angle and a V coating applied over a powdered metal substrate. The overall length is 119 mm with a 75 mm flute length, a straight-cylindrical shank, and a right-hand spiral flute configuration. The R-thinned point reduces thrust and improves self-centering on entry. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die techs, HVAC fabricators, and general metalworking shops routinely reach for this bit when production accuracy and tool life matter.
This bit is rated for drilling into steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nickel alloy workpieces, covering ISO material codes P, K, S, and H. Typical applications include blind hole drilling, cross-hole drilling, standard through-hole drilling, and self-centering operations. The tapered web and regular spiral geometry make it well suited for both manual drill press setups and CNC drilling cycles where repeatable entry and chip evacuation are priorities. It does not support coolant-through delivery, so external coolant or cutting fluid applied at the point is the standard approach for harder materials.
Designed for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills accepting a straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for ferrous workpiece materials including steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nickel alloy. Part of OSG Series 1950.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before beginning any drilling operation and verify runout before engaging the workpiece. Apply cutting fluid or external coolant at the drill point when working hardened steels or nickel alloys to manage heat buildup, since this bit does not support internal coolant delivery. Inspect the cutting edges and point coating for wear after extended runs, as a degraded V coating will increase thrust and reduce hole-diameter consistency. Follow shop lockout-tagout procedures before changing or inspecting the bit in any powered spindle.
