The OSG 8608439 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in ferrous and hard metals. Built from XPM high-speed steel with a coated finish, this bit delivers increased wear resistance and longer tool life compared to standard HSS bits. It measures 0.173 inches (Wire Size 17, 4.39 mm) in diameter with a 130-degree split-point geometry and R-thinned web for improved chip evacuation and reduced thrust on entry. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard chucks. This bit is intended for machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking professionals who require consistent hole quality in production or repair environments.
The OSG 8608439 is suited for drilling steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nickel alloy workpieces. Its screw machine length profile, shorter than jobber length, provides added rigidity and reduced deflection, making it well-matched for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and screw machines. The 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio and spiral flute geometry support efficient chip clearance in shallow to moderate-depth holes. It is commonly specified in job shops, production machining, and MRO applications where tight hole tolerances are required.
Designed for use in steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nickel alloy workpieces. Fits standard drill chucks and tool holders accepting a 6.00 mm straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for Series 1900 OSG tooling setups and general-purpose metalworking equipment.
Installation and tool changes should be performed with the machine fully powered down and spindle at rest. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify runout before cutting. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit, so external coolant or cutting fluid application is recommended when drilling hard alloys to manage heat buildup. Follow applicable OSHA and shop safety standards for rotating tooling during setup and use.
