The OSG 8608431 is a screw machine length drill bit engineered for high-performance metal cutting applications. It carries a 0.1695-inch diameter (Wire Size 18, 4.31 mm) and features a 130-degree split point with R-thinned web geometry to reduce thrust and improve self-centering on entry. The XPM-coated high-performance tool steel construction delivers elevated wear resistance and heat dissipation compared to standard HSS tooling. With two spiral flutes and a straight-cylindrical shank, this bit is suited for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and screw machine setups where rigid tool holding and precise hole tolerances are required.
This bit is designed for drilling steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nickel alloy workpieces in production and job-shop environments. The screw machine length format provides a shorter, more rigid profile than jobber-length bits, making it a go-to choice when drilling close to fixtures or in tight setups. The overall length of 68 mm (approximately 2.68 inches) and 24 mm (approximately 0.94 inch) flute length fit standard short-series tool holders. Typical users include machinist trades, maintenance technicians, and production floor operators running repetitive hole operations in hard or abrasive ferrous materials.
Designed for use in steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and nickel alloy workpieces. Fits standard drill chucks and short-series collet holders accepting a 6 mm (approximately 0.236 inch) straight-cylindrical shank. Suited for use across the 0.1500 to 0.2000 inch decimal inch size range class of screw machine length tooling in Series 1900.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with drill press or CNC setup procedures. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before changing tooling. Verify chuck or collet runout before use, as excessive runout accelerates wear and degrades hole quality. Do not exceed the recommended surface footage for XPM-coated tooling in the workpiece material being drilled; consult the OSG Series 1900 speeds and feeds guide for cutting parameters.
