The OSG 8608109 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding metal-cutting applications. Built from powdered metal (XPM) and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this bit delivers improved wear resistance and heat tolerance compared to standard HSS tooling. It carries a wire gauge size of 57, equivalent to 0.0430 inches (1.09 mm) in diameter, and features a 130-degree point angle with an R-thinned point geometry for reduced thrust and cleaner entry. The short screw machine length format provides added rigidity in drill press, CNC, and turret lathe setups. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This drill bit is suited for production drilling in steel, cast iron, high-temperature alloys, and hardened materials where tool life and hole quality are priorities. The screw machine length keeps the bit close to the chuck for maximum stability, making it appropriate for close-tolerance work on manual mills, CNC machining centers, and turret lathes. The 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio supports chip evacuation in short-hole drilling without coolant-through capability required.
Designed as a high-performance replacement-style screw machine drill bit for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks and collet holders; primary workpiece materials include steel, cast iron, high-temperature alloys, and hardened materials as stated by the manufacturer.
Installation and use of this drill bit should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with cutting tool setup and machine operation. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing the bit from the chuck or collet. Verify shank seating and chuck tightness before initiating a cut. Do not exceed the tool's rated application materials or run at feeds and speeds outside the manufacturer's published parameters for the workpiece material.
