The OSG 8597283 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for precision hole-making in metal and alloy workpieces. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS) and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS. The 130-degree split point geometry uses an S-thinned web that promotes self-centering on entry, reducing the need for a center punch on most applications. With a 2.83 mm cutting diameter, 65 mm overall length, and a 3.00 mm straight-cylindrical shank, this bit seats securely in standard drill chucks and collet holders. The regular spiral flute design evacuates chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole drilling operations.
This bit is suited for drilling steel, stainless steel, aluminum, aluminum alloys, and aluminum silicate in production or maintenance environments. Typical applications include blind hole drilling, cross hole drilling, and self-centering starts where a pilot hole is not practical. The 33 mm flute length provides adequate chip clearance for the 2.83 mm diameter range. It is commonly used by machinists, millwrights, and metal fabricators working on light-gauge ferrous and non-ferrous components. The Series 1600 classification positions this as a high-performance jobber bit within the OSG lineup.
Designed for use in standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, and handheld power drills equipped with a chuck or collet accepting a 3.00 mm straight shank. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, aluminum, aluminum alloy, and aluminum silicate per OSG Series 1600 specifications. Coolant-through is not supported on this model.
Install the shank fully into the drill chuck or collet holder and verify it is centered and secure before operation. Set spindle speed appropriate for the workpiece material and drill diameter - consult a standard speeds-and-feeds chart for HSS tooling in the target material. For blind hole applications, set depth stop before drilling to avoid breakthrough damage. Inspect the cutting edge and TiN coating before each use; a damaged or dull edge should be replaced rather than reground without proper equipment.
