The OSG 8008702 is a high speed steel spiral flute STI tap designed for cutting Screw Thread Insert (STI) threads in a variety of metals and engineered materials. The 10-32 UNF thread profile and 3-flute spiral construction with a 50-degree helix angle work together to evacuate chips efficiently out of the hole, making this tap well suited for blind-hole applications where chip packing is a concern. The bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a hole. The proprietary elektraLUBE surface finish reduces friction and heat buildup during cutting, extending tool life in production and maintenance environments. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.875 inches.
This tap is used in machining, maintenance, and repair operations where standard threads need to be cut oversize to accept helical wire thread inserts. Typical applications include repairing stripped threads in aluminum, cast iron, and steel components. The 10-32 UNF size is common in precision assemblies, aerospace, electronics, and light mechanical equipment. It is appropriate for use with manual tap handles or CNC tapping operations where feed rate control is available. Professionals in tool and die, machine maintenance, aerospace, and general fabrication shops regularly specify STI taps for insert installation work.
Designed for use in threading operations that require STI-profile 10-32 UNF oversize threads to accept standard helical wire thread inserts. Verify insert manufacturer specifications to confirm STI tap sizing requirements before use.
STI taps are installed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians using a properly sized tap handle or rigid CNC tapping cycle. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping to prevent movement that can break the tool. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and improve thread finish. Do not force the tap if resistance increases unexpectedly - back off to clear chips and reapply cutting fluid.
