The OSG 6008100 is a hand STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed to cut 8-32 UNC internal threads for helical insert installation. Built from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap produces accurate threads in a wide range of materials including aluminum, carbon steel, cast iron, and hardened steel. The three-flute geometry provides a balance of chip clearance and cutting support, while the plug chamfer allows for progressive thread engagement from the start. The H2 thread limit maintains close dimensional control for consistent insert fit. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a thread length of 0.75 inches.
STI taps are used when a threaded hole is being prepared to accept a helical wire insert, restoring or reinforcing stripped or damaged threads in both new fabrication and repair applications. The 8-32 UNC sizing makes this tap a common choice in light-duty mechanical assemblies, electronics enclosures, and precision sheet metal work where machine screw inserts are required. It is suitable for hand tapping operations in maintenance, repair, and production environments across industrial, commercial, and field service settings.
Designed for use in hand tapping operations requiring 8-32 UNC STI threads to accept standard helical wire inserts. Compatible with materials including aluminum, carbon steel, cast iron, and hardened steel per OSG Series 126 specifications.
This tap is intended for hand tapping and should be used with an appropriate tap wrench sized for the 0.131-inch square drive. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping oil for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Secure the workpiece firmly before starting and back off periodically to break chips. Follow applicable shop safety practices and ensure the correct STI tap drill size is used prior to tapping to achieve proper thread engagement for the insert being installed.
