The OSG 5828500 is a cobalt double-end square end mill designed for milling ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials in metalworking applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers heat resistance and edge retention that standard HSS tooling cannot match. The cutter measures 0.2953 inches in diameter with a 9/16-inch length of cut, a 3/8-inch shank diameter, and a 3-1/8-inch overall length. A 30-degree spiral flute helix and right-hand cut geometry provide efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. With two flutes and centercutting capability, this end mill can plunge directly into workpiece material when required.
This end mill is suited for manual mills, CNC machining centers, and knee mills operating on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and similar ferrous stock. The double-end design extends tool life by offering a second cutting end once the first is worn. It is used in general-purpose slotting, peripheral milling, and light profiling operations. Machinists, tool-and-die shops, and maintenance machining environments are the primary users. The uncoated finish makes it straightforward to resharpen without specialized coating equipment.
Designed for use in standard 3/8-inch collets or end mill holders on manual and CNC milling machines. Part of the OSG Series 582 cobalt double-end square end mill line.
Installation is performed by a machinist using an appropriately sized collet or end mill holder rated for 3/8-inch shank tooling. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the drawbar or collet nut is torqued per the machine manufacturer's specifications before engaging the workpiece. Verify runout with a dial indicator after mounting to confirm concentricity. Do not exceed the recommended depth of cut or feed rate for the material being machined, as cobalt tooling is rigid but can chip under excessive load.
