The OSG 5820500 is a cobalt double-end square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from M42 high-speed cobalt steel, it delivers improved heat resistance over standard HSS tooling, making it a practical choice for harder workpiece materials and higher feed rates. The cutter measures 0.2756 inches in diameter with a 9/16 inch length of cut, a 3/8 inch shank diameter, and an overall length of 3.125 inches. Two spiral flutes at a 30-degree helix angle provide efficient chip evacuation and a smooth cutting action. The uncoated finish allows for easy resharpening. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals rely on this style of end mill for slotting, profiling, and light plunge operations in manual and CNC setups.
The 5820500 is suited for light-to-medium milling operations on machining centers, knee mills, and manual vertical mills. Its centercutting geometry allows direct plunge entry into the workpiece without a pre-drilled pilot hole, which simplifies multi-axis setups. The double-end design provides a second cutting edge when the primary end is worn, extending tool life and reducing per-operation tooling cost. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration matches the standard spindle rotation on the vast majority of milling machines. This end mill fits applications in job shops, maintenance machining, and prototype work where cobalt tooling is specified over carbide for toughness in interrupted cuts or when cutting conditions are less controlled.
Designed as a standard-shank cobalt double-end square end mill for use in 3/8 inch collets, end mill holders, and Weldon-style holders on vertical milling machines and CNC machining centers. Part of the OSG Series 582 product line.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tool-room personnel. Secure the 3/8 inch shank in a properly sized collet or end mill holder and verify runout before cutting. Power down and lock out the spindle before changing tooling. Do not exceed the rated depth of cut or feed rate for the material being machined, and ensure the tool is fully seated to the recommended gauge line before clamping.
