The OSG 5810600 is a 4-flute cobalt square end mill designed for milling operations in ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it provides improved heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS tooling. The cutter measures 0.315 inches in diameter with a 3/4-inch length of cut and a 3/8-inch shank diameter, giving it a compact, rigid profile suited for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling in a variety of CNC and manual machining setups. The 30-degree helix angle promotes smooth chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces across the flute length.
This end mill is intended for use in machine shops, toolrooms, and production environments where consistent performance in steel, stainless, and high-alloy materials is required. It is a single-end, right-hand cut tool with right-hand spiral flutes and is sold individually. The uncoated finish makes it straightforward to resharpen when edge life is depleted. OSG Series 581 tooling is commonly used in both prototype and production milling applications where cobalt tooling is preferred over carbide for interrupted cuts or lighter-duty spindles.
Designed as an OSG Series 581 replacement or direct-purchase cobalt square end mill for use in standard 3/8-inch ER collet chucks, end mill holders, or side-lock holders on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully stopped and the machine powered down or in E-stop. Proper tool runout should be verified with a dial indicator after mounting to minimize premature wear and chatter. This is a non-centercutting end mill and must not be used for direct plunge cuts into solid material. Follow shop safety protocols and machine manufacturer guidelines for speeds and feeds based on workpiece material and depth of cut.
