The OSG 5801200 is a cobalt square end mill designed for milling operations in metalworking and machining applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this tool delivers reliable performance in harder ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The 2-flute, spiral flute geometry with a 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting. With a 0.5118-inch cutting diameter, a 1.125-inch length of cut, and a 0.5000-inch shank diameter, it fits standard toolholders common in shop environments. The centercutting design allows plunge cutting without a pre-drilled pilot hole. This is a right-hand cut, right-hand flute, uncoated end mill intended for machinists and tool-and-die professionals running manual or CNC milling equipment.
This end mill suits general-purpose slot milling, profiling, and plunge operations in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments. The Series 580 designation places it within OSG's standard cobalt end mill line, appropriate for regular-length applications. It is well-suited to milling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and similar materials where cobalt tooling is preferred over standard high-speed steel. The 3.125-inch overall length keeps the tool rigid during cuts, reducing deflection in typical benchtop and vertical milling machine setups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use tool for standard 1/2-inch shank toolholders and collets used in vertical milling machines, knee mills, and CNC machining centers running right-hand spindle rotation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. Secure the 0.5000-inch shank firmly in a compatible collet or end mill holder before use, and verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning cuts. Always power down and lock out the spindle before changing tooling. Follow the machine manufacturer and tooling manufacturer guidelines for recommended speeds and feeds based on workpiece material.
