The OSG 5742408 is a square end mill designed for precision milling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from 3% vanadium high speed steel, it offers greater wear resistance and edge retention compared to standard M2 HSS tooling. The TiCN surface finish further extends tool life by reducing friction and heat buildup at the cutting edge. With a 0.6875-inch cutting diameter, a 1.625-inch length of cut, and a 30-degree helix angle, this end mill is suited for peripheral milling, slotting, and light profiling work on manual and CNC milling machines. It is a single-end, center-cutting tool with right-hand cut and right-hand spiral flute geometry.
This end mill fits standard milling applications where a 0.625-inch shank is required. The 3.75-inch overall length and regular-length configuration make it appropriate for typical reach requirements in general-purpose shop work. It is commonly used in job shops, tool rooms, and maintenance machining environments where vanadium HSS tooling is preferred over carbide for interrupted cuts or setups prone to vibration. The centercutting design allows direct plunge entry into the workpiece when needed.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use end mill for milling machines accepting a 0.625-inch straight shank, consistent with OSG Series 574 tooling specifications.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with end mill holding systems and speeds and feeds for HSS tooling. Secure the shank fully in a collet or end mill holder to the minimum insertion depth required by the holder manufacturer, ensuring concentricity before running. Power down and lock out the spindle before changing tooling. Do not exceed the recommended depth of cut or feed rate for the workpiece material, as overloading a 4-flute HSS end mill can cause edge chipping or tool breakage.
