The OSG 5741400 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in metal and alloy workpieces. Manufactured from 3% vanadium high speed steel, it delivers improved wear resistance and edge retention compared to standard M2 HSS tooling. The 0.5-inch cutting diameter pairs with a 1.25-inch length of cut and a 30-degree helix angle to balance chip evacuation with cutting stability. Center-cutting geometry allows plunge entry, expanding its utility across slotting, profiling, and pocketing operations. This is a right-hand cut, right-hand flute tool with a spiral flute configuration and an uncoated finish. It is intended for installation in manual mills and CNC machining centers by machinists and tooling professionals.
The OSG 5741400 suits a wide range of milling applications in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments. Its regular-length body and 3.25-inch overall length make it compatible with standard toolholders and collet chucks accepting a 0.5-inch shank. Typical applications include shoulder milling, peripheral profiling, and full-slot cuts in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The uncoated vanadium HSS construction is particularly suited to lower-speed setups and applications where regrinding is part of the tooling workflow.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use cutting tool for milling machines accepting a 0.5-inch straight shank end mill, including manual knee mills and CNC machining centers with standard ER, DA, or equivalent collet systems.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing tooling. Insert the shank to the full recommended engagement depth in the collet or toolholder and torque the retaining nut per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before commencing cuts, as excessive runout accelerates flute wear and degrades surface finish.
