The OSG 5740708 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for general-purpose milling in a wide range of metalworking and machining applications. Built from 3% vanadium high speed steel, it offers improved wear resistance over standard M2 HSS, making it well suited for harder workpieces and higher-production runs. The cutting end features a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating that further extends tool life by reducing friction and heat buildup at the cutting edge. With a 30-degree helix angle and spiral flute geometry, the tool promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. This end mill is centercutting, allowing direct plunge entry into the workpiece.
The 5740708 is intended for use in vertical milling machines, CNC machining centers, and manual knee mills in job shop, tool and die, and production machining environments. Its right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration is the standard orientation for conventional milling setups. The 5/16-inch diameter with a 3/8-inch shank fits standard collet chucks and end mill holders commonly found in most shop setups. This is a regular-length tool suited for standard-reach profiling, slotting, and peripheral milling operations on ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Designed as an OEM-style tooling solution for use with standard 3/8-inch collet chucks and end mill holders on vertical milling machines and CNC machining centers.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with rotating cutting tool safety. Ensure the machine spindle is fully powered down and the tool holder is clean and free of debris before seating the shank. The tool should be secured to the manufacturer-specified torque range for the collet or holder being used — consult the holder documentation for that value. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or damage before each use; do not run a damaged end mill.
