The OSG 5731608 is a 2-flute square end mill ground from 3% vanadium high speed steel and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating. It carries a 9/16-inch cutting diameter, a 1-1/8-inch length of cut, and a 1/2-inch shank diameter, with a 3-1/8-inch overall length. The 30-degree right-hand spiral flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The TiCN finish adds surface hardness and reduces friction, extending tool life in moderate-to-high-demand milling applications. This end mill is centercutting, allowing direct plunge entry. It is installed and run by machinists and tool-and-die professionals on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
The OSG 5731608 is suited to general-purpose slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling operations in a shop or production environment. The regular-length body and 1/2-inch shank make it a practical fit for standard ER or R8 collet chucks. It is appropriate for cutting mild steels, tool steels, aluminum, and similar materials where a vanadium HSS substrate provides adequate heat resistance without the cost of a carbide tool. The Series 573 designation places it within OSG's established line of vanadium HSS end mills.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use end mill for standard 1/2-inch collet chucks, ER collet systems, or Weldon-flat holders used on CNC machining centers and manual vertical mills.
Installation and tool changes must be performed with the machine spindle fully stopped and the control in an e-stop or lock-out state. Seat the shank fully into the collet or holder to the minimum shank engagement depth recommended by the toolholder manufacturer before tightening. Inspect the collet bore and shank for chips or burrs prior to seating. A licensed machinist or qualified shop technician should verify runout with a dial indicator before production use.
