The OSG 5731508 is a square end mill designed for general-purpose milling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from 3% vanadium high speed steel, this single-end tool carries a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) finish that extends tool life by improving surface hardness and reducing friction at the cutting edge. The 17/32 inch (0.5313 inch) mill diameter paired with a 30-degree right-hand spiral flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. It is centercutting, allowing both plunge and peripheral milling without a pre-drilled entry point. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this type of end mill in manual mills and CNC machining centers alike.
The 5731508 is suited for slot milling, profile milling, and shoulder milling applications in job shops, maintenance shops, and production environments. The 1-1/8 inch length of cut provides adequate depth for most standard material removal tasks without excessive tool deflection. The 1/2 inch shank diameter fits standard R8, ER, and side-lock toolholders commonly found on Bridgeport-style knee mills and CNC vertical machining centers. End mills of this type are installed by machinists using appropriate collet chucks, end mill holders, or side-lock holders sized to the 1/2 inch shank diameter. Secure the shank fully within the holder to the recommended insertion depth before torquing to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Always de-energize and lock out the spindle drive before changing tooling. Inspect the shank and flutes for chips or damage before each use; a damaged cutting edge can cause tool failure and workpiece scrap.
