The OSG 5730908 is a single-end square end mill designed for general-purpose milling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It is built from 3 percent vanadium high speed steel, which provides improved wear resistance and toughness compared to standard M2 HSS. The cutting end carries a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) finish that further extends tool life by reducing friction and heat buildup at the cutting edge. At 0.375 inches in diameter with a 0.5625-inch length of cut and a 30-degree helix angle, this tool is well suited for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling in machining centers and manual mills. It is centercutting, allowing direct plunge entry into the workpiece.
This end mill fits standard milling applications in job shops, production facilities, and tool rooms. The 0.375-inch shank diameter seats directly in common ER collet chucks, end mill holders, or Weldon-style holders. The 2-5/16-inch overall length keeps the tool rigid in typical setups, minimizing deflection during side-milling passes. The two-flute geometry provides adequate chip clearance when cutting softer steels, aluminum, and similar materials at moderate feed rates. Series 573 is OSG's regular-length, spiral-flute HSS offering intended for general-purpose material removal where carbide tooling is not required.
Designed as a general-purpose replacement or standard-stock square end mill for use in manual knee mills, CNC vertical machining centers, and similar setups that accept a 3/8-inch shank diameter toolholder.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. The shank should be clean and free of burrs before seating in the holder, and the collet or set-screw holder should be torqued per the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in an e-stop or locked-out state before changing end mills. Do not exceed the recommended depth of cut for the diameter and material combination to avoid tool deflection or breakage.
