The OSG 5460408 is a 4-flute square end mill designed for precision metal removal in professional machining applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tool delivers improved wear resistance and heat tolerance compared to standard HSS tooling. The single-end design features a right-hand cut with a right-hand helix and measures 3.125 inches in overall length with a 0.375-inch shank diameter. Center-cutting geometry allows for plunge entry as well as peripheral and slot milling. This tool is suited for machinists and toolroom professionals working on ferrous and difficult-to-machine alloys.
This end mill is appropriate for use in vertical and horizontal milling machines, CNC machining centers, and manual knee mills. It is well suited for applications involving stainless steel, alloy steels, and other tough ferrous materials where cobalt tooling outperforms standard M2 HSS. The 3/8-inch shank fits standard collets and end mill holders commonly found in production and toolroom environments. Single-end configuration makes this a practical choice for general-purpose slotting, profiling, and plunge cutting operations.
Designed as a standard 3/8-inch shank single-end square end mill compatible with collet chucks, side-lock holders, and shrink-fit toolholders sized for 3/8-inch shank tooling on milling machines and CNC machining centers.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for tool holding and runout tolerances. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before changing tooling. Verify collet or holder cleanliness and proper shank engagement depth before tightening. Consult feeds and speeds reference data appropriate for the workpiece material and machine horsepower before commencing a cut.
