The OSG 5404300 is a cobalt square end mill built for material removal in demanding milling applications. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this 6-flute tool offers a 1.125-inch cutting diameter and a 2-inch length of cut, making it well suited for slotting, peripheral milling, and face milling operations where tool rigidity and edge retention matter. The right-hand cut, right-hand spiral flute design with a 30-degree helix promotes efficient chip evacuation and stable cutting action. It ships uncoated, ready for use or further coating at the shop's discretion. A licensed machinist or CNC programmer typically selects and installs this tool.
This end mill is designed for use in vertical machining centers, knee mills, and CNC milling machines. Its 0.875-inch shank diameter fits standard collet chucks and end mill holders common in job shop and production environments. The regular-length configuration and 4.25-inch overall length suit general-purpose milling tasks in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The Series 540 designation places it within OSG's cobalt end mill product family. It is a single-end tool intended for professional machine shop use.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use cobalt square end mill fitting standard 0.875-inch end mill holders and collet chucks used in CNC and manual milling machine setups.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolsetter. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing the tool. Seat the shank fully into the holder and torque the retention hardware to the machine manufacturer's specification for the holder type in use. Verify runout with a dial indicator after mounting before beginning a cut, and confirm this tool's non-centercutting geometry is accounted for in the toolpath -- use helical entry or ramp entry rather than direct plunge.
