The OSG 5401605 is a square-end, single-end cobalt end mill engineered for machining ferrous and hard-to-machine alloys. It measures 17/32 inches (0.5313 inches) in diameter with a 1/2-inch shank and a 3-3/8-inch overall length. The 1-3/8-inch length of cut makes it a standard regular-length tool suited to most milling centers and manual mills. Four spiral flutes with a 30-degree helix angle promote efficient chip evacuation and stable cutting action. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction at the cutting edge, extending tool life in interrupted and continuous cuts alike. This is a right-hand cut, right-hand flute configuration. The tool is not centercutting and is not designed for plunge operations.
This end mill is used in general-purpose milling applications including profiling, slotting, and peripheral cuts on ferrous metals, alloy steels, and stainless steel. It is well suited to production environments where cobalt offers a meaningful advantage over standard high-speed steel in terms of heat resistance and edge retention. Typical installations are on vertical machining centers, knee mills, and CNC milling machines where a 1/2-inch collet or end mill holder is used. The OSG Series 540 designation indicates a standard cobalt end mill family with consistent geometry across sizes.
Designed as a replacement-style end mill for use in any milling machine or machining center accepting a 1/2-inch shank. Part of the OSG Series 540 cobalt end mill family.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Secure the 1/2-inch shank in a properly sized collet, end mill holder, or Weldon-style holder and verify runout before cutting. Power down the spindle fully before tool changes. Because this tool is not centercutting, do not use it to plunge directly into solid material — ramp or helical entry paths are required when starting in a pocket.
