The OSG 5229605 is a cobalt square end mill designed for precision milling operations in ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this double-end tool delivers extended tool life compared to standard HSS. The 7/16 inch cutting diameter pairs with a 30-degree helix spiral flute geometry and a titanium nitride (TiN) coating to reduce friction, improve chip evacuation, and extend surface finish quality. With 2 flutes and center-cutting capability, the 5229605 is suited for plunge cuts, slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling in a production shop or toolroom environment. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary installers and operators of this tool.
This end mill fits applications in general machining, mold and die work, and production environments where cobalt tooling is specified for heat resistance and wear performance. The 13/16 inch length of cut accommodates moderate-depth slotting and profiling passes. The 1/2 inch shank diameter seats in standard R8, ER, or side-lock end mill holders on vertical mills and CNC machining centers. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration is the industry standard for conventional and climb milling operations. Series 522 double-end design provides two usable cutting ends, extending the service life per tool.
Designed for use in 1/2 inch end mill holders including R8 collets, ER32 collet chucks, and side-lock Weldon-style holders on manual and CNC vertical milling machines. OSG Series 522 double-end cobalt end mill.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Power down and lock out the spindle before inserting or removing the tool from the holder. Ensure the shank is fully seated to the recommended engagement depth for the holder type in use — insufficient engagement increases runout and risk of tool pullout. Do not exceed the recommended depth-of-cut for cobalt HSS tooling in hard or abrasive materials; consult OSG Series 522 feeds and speeds data for the workpiece material being cut.
