The OSG 5209700 is a cobalt square end mill designed for milling ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials in metalworking operations. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers heat and wear resistance suited to cutting steel, stainless, and cast iron. The cutter measures 0.4688 inches (15/32 inch) in diameter with a 0.8125-inch (13/16 inch) length of cut and a 3/8-inch shank diameter. Overall length is 2.5 inches. The two-flute, spiral geometry with a 30-degree helix angle promotes chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. The uncoated finish is standard for applications where regrinding is common. Machinists, tool and die technicians, and CNC operators are the typical users.
This end mill fits conventional milling and CNC machining center applications involving slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling in ferrous metals and alloy steels. The centercutting capability allows plunge entry directly into a workpiece without a pre-drilled hole, adding setup flexibility. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration is standard for most vertical and horizontal milling setups. The regular-length classification makes it appropriate for general-purpose work where extended reach is not required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use cutting tool for standard milling machines and CNC machining centers accepting a 3/8-inch straight shank end mill in the Series 520 regular-length range.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC setup technicians using a collet chuck or end mill holder rated for the 3/8-inch shank diameter. Ensure the spindle and machine are fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Confirm runout with a dial indicator after seating the tool to avoid premature wear or chatter. Follow shop safety protocols and machine manufacturer guidelines for maximum RPM and feed rate selection based on workpiece material.
