The OSG 5004602 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with an elektraLUBE coating, this tap produces a 5/16-18 UNC right-hand thread to a 2B class of fit with an H5 thread limit. The spiral flute geometry evacuates chips back through the flute toward the shank, making it well suited for blind-hole tapping applications where chip packing is a concern. It carries a plug chamfer for general-purpose starting and is sized at 2-23/32 inches overall length with a shank diameter of 0.429 inches. Licensed trades and machining professionals use this tool in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is appropriate for threading operations in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. The 50-degree helix angle promotes smooth chip flow at moderate to high cutting speeds, reducing the risk of tap breakage in deeper blind holes. It is a practical choice for both CNC tapping cycles and hand-tapping operations where thread quality and consistency are required across mixed-material workloads.
Designed for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel workpieces requiring a 5/16-18 UNC internal thread to a 2B class of fit. Part of OSG Series 107.
This tap should be installed in a tapping chuck or collet sized for the 0.429-inch shank diameter before use. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 5/16-18 UNC thread prior to tapping. When used in a CNC machine, verify spindle speed and feed rate match the tap pitch to prevent thread damage or breakage. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, as a damaged cutting edge can tear threads or seize in the hole.
