The OSG 462-5001 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in metalworking and machining applications. Built from micrograin carbide, it delivers consistent edge retention and dimensional accuracy across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The tool features a 1/2 inch cutting diameter, a 1 inch length of cut, and a 4 inch overall length with a 1/2 inch shank. The 30-degree helix angle promotes smooth chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces. Single-end construction keeps the tool compact and straightforward to index in standard toolholders. Machinists and CNC operators handling production or job-shop work are the primary installers.
The OSG 462-5001 is suited for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling operations in machining centers and manual milling machines. The centercutting geometry allows plunge entry directly into the workpiece without a pre-drilled pilot hole, expanding setup flexibility. With right-hand cut and right-hand spiral flutes, it is compatible with standard spindle rotation on conventional vertical and horizontal mills. The Series 462 designation places it in OSG general-purpose solid carbide end mill lineup, appropriate for shops running aluminum, steel, stainless, and cast iron at moderate to high surface footage.
Designed as an OEM-style solid carbide end mill for use in standard 1/2 inch collets, end mill holders, and hydraulic or shrink-fit toolholders on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills.
Installation is performed by machinists and CNC setup technicians familiar with rotating cutting tool protocols. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before loading or removing the tool. Seat the shank fully into the toolholder and torque the retention mechanism to the toolholder manufacturer specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning production cuts, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear on carbide tools.
