The OSG 4550708 is a single-end square end mill designed for precision milling in ferrous and hardened materials where tool life and edge retention are critical. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tool delivers enhanced hardness and heat resistance compared to standard HSS tooling. The 4-flute geometry with a 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation while maintaining a strong core for rigidity. It is sized at 5/8 inch diameter with a matching 5/8 inch shank, making it a direct chuck or collet mount. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users of this end mill in production and job-shop environments.
The OSG 4550708 is suited for slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling operations in steel, stainless steel, and other ferrous alloys. The long flute length of 2-1/2 inches accommodates deeper axial cuts typical of mold work, die machining, and general production milling. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration is standard for conventional and climb milling on vertical and horizontal machining centers. This tool belongs to the OSG Series 455 long-length end mill family and features a fine pitch classification.
Designed as an OEM-style production cutting tool within the OSG Series 455 long-length end mill family, compatible with standard ER, DA, and straight-shank collet systems accepting a 5/8 inch shank diameter.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with tool holding and runout verification. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before inserting or removing the end mill. Verify collet or chuck condition and cleanliness before seating the shank to the recommended engagement depth. Follow the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for speeds and feeds appropriate to cobalt tooling in the target material.
