The OSG 414-500008 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in metalworking and machining applications. Built on OSG Series 414, it features a 0.500 inch mill diameter, a 5/8 inch (0.6250 inch) length of cut, and a 0.500 inch shank diameter with a 2-1/2 inch overall length. The four-flute configuration with a 30-degree right-hand spiral promotes efficient chip evacuation and surface finish quality. A titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating adds surface hardness and wear resistance, extending tool life in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Micrograin carbide substrate supports dimensional stability under demanding cutting conditions. This tool is installed and used by CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production and job-shop environments.
The 414-500008 suits stub-length milling operations where rigidity is prioritized over reach. Its centercutting geometry allows direct plunge entry into workpiece material, making it suitable for slot milling, pocket milling, and profiling passes. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation match the standard spindle rotation of vertical and horizontal machining centers. This end mill is appropriate for use in ferrous alloys, hardened steels, and similar materials where TiCN coating delivers measurable performance advantages over uncoated carbide. Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom professional. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully into the collet or tool holder to the recommended engagement depth and torque the retention mechanism per the tool holder manufacturer specification. Inspect the collet or holder bore for wear or contamination before seating, as runout at the cutting edge directly affects surface finish and tool life.
