The OSG 404-312508 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precise milling operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Part of OSG Series 404, this tool features a 5/16 inch cutting diameter, a 13/16 inch length of cut, and a 2-1/2 inch overall length. The micrograin carbide substrate delivers hardness and wear resistance well beyond standard carbide grades. A TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating reduces friction and extends tool life in demanding cutting conditions. The 30-degree helix angle promotes smooth chip evacuation while maintaining cutting stability. This end mill is centercutting, allowing plunge entry into the workpiece.
The 404-312508 is suited for slot milling, peripheral milling, and profiling operations on machining centers and CNC mills. Its regular-length geometry fits standard toolholders and collets accepting a 5/16 inch shank. Right-hand cut and right-hand spiral flute configuration matches the vast majority of CNC spindle setups. The 4-flute design balances material removal rate with chip clearance, making it appropriate for both roughing passes in softer metals and finishing passes in harder alloys. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in job shops or production environments will find this a reliable general-purpose end mill.
Designed as a standard OEM-style solid carbide square end mill for use with 5/16 inch collets and toolholders on CNC machining centers and manual mills requiring a regular-length, 4-flute end mill.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for toolholder torque and runout specifications. Confirm the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe lockout state before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully into the collet or toolholder to the recommended engagement depth to minimize runout and prevent pullout under load. Verify tool projection and runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut cycle.
