The OSG 404-1378-BN is a solid carbide ball end mill designed for precision milling across a wide range of workpiece materials. The tool measures 0.1575 inches (3.50 mm) in diameter with a 0.4724 inch (12.00 mm) length of cut and a 51 mm overall length. It features 4 helical flutes with a 30-degree helix angle, a straight-cylindrical shank measuring 4.00 mm in diameter, and a 1.75 mm nose radius. Constructed from micrograin solid carbide and finished uncoated (bright), this end mill suits both roughing and finishing operations. It is a single-end, right-hand cut, right-hand flute tool belonging to the OSG Series 404BN.
This end mill is suited for machining steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. Its compact diameter and standard-length configuration make it appropriate for contouring, slotting, and profiling operations in die and mold work, precision component machining, and general metalworking applications where a small-diameter ball end profile is required. The absence of a coolant-through feature and neck relief reflects its standard-reach, general-purpose design intent.
Designed for use in compatible end mill holders or collet chucks accepting a 4.00 mm straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metal, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials per ISO material codes P, M, K, N, S, and H.
Installation is performed by machinists or tooling technicians using a compatible collet or end mill holder sized for a 4.00 mm shank. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool is secured with appropriate torque to the toolholder manufacturer's specifications before initiating any cut. Verify runout after installation using a dial indicator before committing to a production pass, particularly at this diameter where small deflections affect surface finish and tool life.
