The OSG 3144203 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in a variety of workpiece materials. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a nitride coating, this tap delivers solid wear resistance and extended tool life in production and maintenance threading operations. The plug chamfer geometry — typically 3 to 5 threads of lead — allows the tap to start easily in through-holes or partially blind applications. With 4 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, it is suited for hand tapping or machine tapping setups where chip clearance in the flute lands is adequate for the cut.
This tap is intended for use in plastic materials as noted in its material application rating. The 6-32 UNC thread form is a standard coarse-pitch fastener thread widely used in sheet metal, electrical enclosures, electronics assemblies, and light mechanical subassemblies. It is installed by machinists, tool and die technicians, maintenance mechanics, and field service technicians working with tapping fixtures, hand tap wrenches, or CNC tapping cycles.
Designed as a replacement-style straight flute tap for 6-32 UNC threading applications in plastic materials, compatible with standard tap holders and tapping heads accepting the corresponding shank diameter and square drive.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or technician using properly sized tap holders or wrenches matched to the square drive dimensions. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is started perpendicular to the hole to avoid tap breakage or cross-threading. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant externally for the workpiece material even when coolant-through is not available. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use — a damaged tap should not be reused in production threading operations.
