The OSG 3056148 is a 2-flute solid carbide ball end mill engineered for high-precision finishing operations in hard and high-hardness steel materials. The tool measures 0.0197 inches (0.50 mm) in cutting diameter with a 0.25 mm nose radius and features a 30-degree medium helix for stable chip evacuation during demanding cuts. A DUROREY PVD coating improves wear resistance and thermal performance at the cutting edge. The extended-reach, long-neck design provides clearance in deep-pocket and confined-feature applications where standard-length tools cannot reach. This mill is a single-end, right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration suited for CNC machining centers running tight-tolerance finish passes.
This end mill is intended for use on hard materials and steels in precision machining environments, including die and mold work, aerospace components, and medical part manufacturing where small-diameter, high-accuracy cuts are required. The extended neck length of 8.10 mm and neck diameter of 0.48 mm allow access to features with restricted radial clearance. It is designed for use by machinists and tool-and-die professionals operating high-speed CNC equipment. The Series 8590 designation identifies it within OSG's line of high-hardness finishing tools.
Designed for use in hard materials (H) and steel (P) workpieces as specified by OSG material classification. Primary application is high-hardness steels. Consult OSG Series 8590 tooling documentation to confirm feeds, speeds, and machine compatibility before use.
This tool requires a CNC machining center with a collet or toolholder sized for a 4.00 mm straight-cylindrical shank; verify holder runout before use, as concentricity errors are amplified at this diameter. Power down the spindle and confirm zero-energy state before loading or changing the tool. The small neck diameter and extended reach make the tool susceptible to deflection — use the minimum stick-out necessary for the application. Follow the machine manufacturer and OSG recommendations for feeds and speeds when cutting hard materials.
