The OSG 2992108 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading M12x1.25 metric fine holes in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and tool life in demanding machining environments. The 45-degree helix angle evacuates chips upward out of blind holes, making this tap well suited for through and blind-hole applications where chip packing is a concern. With a modified bottoming chamfer and three flutes, it threads closer to the bottom of a hole than standard taper or plug chamfer taps while maintaining thread quality. Overall length is 85.70 mm (approximately 3-3/8 inches) with a thread length of 13.99 mm.
This tap is intended for use in machining and metalworking operations targeting alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. It carries a D5 thread limit designation, indicating a tolerance class appropriate for standard metric fine thread fits. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working on precision assemblies, automotive components, and industrial equipment will find this tap suitable for CNC tapping centers and hand-tapping applications alike where a metric fine pitch thread is specified.
Compatible with alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpiece materials as specified by OSG for this tool. Part of the OSG Series 299 spiral flute tap family.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping operations and cutting tool safety. Power down and lock out the machine before changing tooling. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Do not force a tap that shows signs of binding or excessive resistance, as this can result in tap breakage and workpiece damage.
