The OSG 2954300 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 10-32 UNF internal threads in a range of materials, with a primary application in aluminum. It features a modified bottoming chamfer, which allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole while still providing enough lead-in for controlled tap entry. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap delivers solid wear resistance and edge retention for production and maintenance threading operations. The 50-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation up and out of the hole during tapping. It carries a 3B class of fit for standard-tolerance threaded connections.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in aluminum and similarly machinable materials where chip removal is critical. The spiral flute design pulls chips upward, reducing the risk of chip packing that can break taps in shallow-clearance applications. It is commonly used in machine shop production runs, maintenance and repair operations, and light manufacturing environments where 10-32 UNF fastener threads are required. Right-hand thread direction with right-hand flute orientation makes it compatible with standard CNC tapping cycles and manual tapping operations.
Designed as a standard-fitment 10-32 UNF spiral flute tap compatible with conventional tap holders, floating holders, and rigid tapping chucks that accept a 0.194-inch shank diameter with a 0.152-inch square drive.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician using the appropriate tap holder for the machine type. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed is appropriate for the material and tap diameter before beginning the cycle. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound before starting, especially when threading aluminum, to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and do not force a tap that shows resistance, as spiral flute taps in blind holes require clear chip paths to prevent breakage.
