The OSG 2942408 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 1/2-13 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction in demanding tapping applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug or taper tap. With a 45-degree right-hand helix and 3 flutes, the tool efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians typically use this tap in CNC or manual tapping operations.
This tap is suited for threading blind or through holes in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. The 2B class of fit is the standard tolerance class for most general-purpose UNC fastener applications in industrial and manufacturing environments. The H5 thread limit provides a controlled oversize allowance appropriate for TiCN-coated taps, compensating for the coating build-up on thread flanks. It is a practical choice for production shops, maintenance departments, and toolrooms where consistent thread quality in tough materials is required.
Compatible material applications include alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. Designed as an OEM-style production tap for 1/2-13 UNC blind and through-hole threading operations where a 2B class of fit is specified.
This tap is installed and driven by a licensed machinist or toolroom technician using a CNC machining center, tapping head, or manual tap wrench rated for the required torque. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the pre-drilled hole before engagement. Use a cutting fluid or tapping oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Do not reverse the tap without fully disengaging chip pressure in blind holes to avoid flute packing and tap breakage.
