The OSG 2941808 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal 3/8-24 UNF right-hand threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and longer tool life compared to uncoated HSS taps. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes while still providing adequate lead-in. With a 45-degree helix angle and 3 right-hand spiral flutes, chips are efficiently evacuated up and out of the hole. This tap is sized at 2-15/16 inches overall length and is a standard choice for machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance professionals working in production or job-shop environments.
The OSG 2941808 is suited for threading operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. The TiCN coating makes it particularly well-suited for abrasive and harder workpiece materials where uncoated taps wear prematurely. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it appropriate for blind-hole applications where full thread depth near the bottom of the hole is required. It is intended for use in CNC machining centers, manual mills, and tapping machines where a spiral flute geometry is preferred for chip control. Coolant-through capability is not included in this tap.
Designed for cutting 3/8-24 UNF internal threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 290 spiral flute tap line.
Install in a tap holder or collet with appropriate torque control to prevent tap breakage, especially in harder materials. Always ensure the workpiece is rigidly fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the drilled hole before engaging. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material, as dry tapping is not recommended with HSS tooling. Follow shop safety procedures and machine manufacturer guidelines when setting spindle speed and feed rate for tapping operations.
