The OSG 2941608 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in a 3/8-16 UNC configuration. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers wear resistance and lubricity in demanding machining environments. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug tap. With a 45-degree helix angle, it efficiently evacuates chips upward during cutting, making it well suited for through-hole and semi-blind applications. It carries a 2B class of fit and an H5 thread limit, making it appropriate for general-purpose fastener applications requiring standard tolerance threads. Machinists and toolroom technicians working with lathes, drill presses, and CNC machining centers are the primary users of this tool.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. The TiCN coating provides added hardness and thermal resistance when cutting ferrous materials, including tougher grades of stainless and die steel that would wear uncoated tooling quickly. The modified bottoming geometry makes it a go-to choice when thread depth in blind holes is critical and full chamfer clearance is not available. It is a single-piece, hand-tap-style tool used in both manual and machine tapping setups.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. Part of the OSG Series 290 spiral flute tap line.
This tap is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians in manual or CNC tapping operations. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole diameter matches the recommended tap drill size for 3/8-16 UNC threads. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life. Never force a tap against resistance; back off periodically to break and clear chips, especially in blind-hole applications.
